The Most Important Thing

Uncommon Sense for the Thoughtful Investor
by Howard Marks

Warren Buffett called it "that rarity, a useful book" — Oaktree Capital's co-founder on second-level thinking, risk, cycles, and why there's no single most important thing in investing.

Why this book

Howard Marks built his reputation, and Oaktree Capital's, largely around distressed debt and credit cycles — a very different vantage point than the equity-focused authors covered earlier in this Book Club, and one that brings a distinctly risk-first lens to ideas this course has already touched on from other angles.

The book's own title is deliberately ironic: Marks argues there is no single most important thing in investing, and each chapter of the original book claims the title for itself to make exactly that point. This course keeps that same spirit — second-level thinking, the psychology of cycles, and a strict, non-standard definition of risk are meant to be held together, not ranked.
