Why this book

This Book Club's other courses focus mainly on individual securities and market behavior. This is the first to zoom out to the economy-wide, macro level — how debt cycles build, why they inevitably deleverage, and what separates a well-managed deleveraging from a genuine depression, using Dalio's own multi-decade experience navigating these cycles at Bridgewater.

This course covers the book in four parts: the mechanical template of how a long-term debt cycle builds and unwinds, the two archetypal bad outcomes (deflationary and inflationary depressions), the policy levers available to manage a deleveraging well versus badly, and detailed case studies — the 1920s-30s United States and 2008 in depth — that ground the abstract template in real historical episodes.
